ADD TEXTURE & FLAVOUR TO STIR FRY, SALADS & NOODLE DISHES: Also known as naga negi or nebuka, this spring onion is high in vitamin C and magnesium. Aromatic yet mild to taste, the spring onions are perfect for adding to a range of pan-Asian dishes such as stir fry, curries, rice, soup and noodle dishes. Or opt for elevating classic scrambled eggs or salads and add on top for extra flavour dimension and texture. ISHIKURA SPRING ONION VARIETY: From field to fork in 3 months! A hardy and versatile variety, the Ishikura is a Japanese bunching spring onion which produces long white stalks with short grip tops. Plant outdoors in beds or indoors in pots to cultivate your fresh-tasting spring onions. This Japanese bunching seed can be sown from early spring until late autumn, producing a 3 month germination period, growing fully after 84-98 days. HOW TO PLANT: Plant spring onion seeds 1cm deep in well-drained soil. If sowing early, grow seedlings in a greenhouse or indoors to avoid frost damage in starter pots, sowing seeds sparingly to give the roots space to grow. If planting into the ground, allow a 20cm distance between seeds. Ishikura spring onions prefer shade with some sun to encourage a longer cropping period in seasonal weather. For best results, sow between March and September for harvest from June to November. TOP GROWING TIPS: Spring onions fill up gaps on plots perfectly, filling space between slower growing crops such as potatoes, beans or peas. Smart growers also use spring onions as row markers as they germinate relatively quickly in little space, marking where other crops have been grown. Also ideal for successional sowing. It is perennial and very cold hardy, with excellent disease resistance. GO BACK TO YOUR ROOTS: Spring onions are a great starter vegetable to grow quickly to see results. Planting veg, herbs and flowers is a wonderful way to spend time in your garden, cultivate mindfulness and appreciate the little things just like in years gone by. Growing crops is immensely satisfying – teach your children or grandchildren this priceless skill of harvesting food in their gardens, allotments, greenhouses, on balconies, inside the home in pots or even in community gardens!
