Low-temperature performance depends chiefly on whether the unit is desiccant or compressor-based. Desiccant dehumidifiers remain effective well below freezing and suit unheated spaces, while compressor models are more energy-efficient in milder conditions but lose effectiveness as temperatures fall.
Check the manufacturer’s rated operating temperature rather than assuming all dehumidifiers behave the same in the cold. Some 'low-temperature' compressors work down to around 0–5°C with auto-defrost, whereas desiccant units often operate reliably well below 0°C.
Look at the litres-per-day extraction figure and whether it’s quoted at a low temperature (many specs are given at 30°C and 80% RH, which overstates cold performance). For basements, garages or holiday homes, choose a unit whose low-temperature extraction matches the size and damp level of the space.
Cold-weather dehumidification can be energy-hungry, especially with desiccant models, so check wattage, power modes and whether the unit has an economical low-power setting. Consider the expected running cost for your typical use pattern and whether features such as timers or humidity-controlled operation can reduce energy bills.
Decide whether you need continuous drain or a condensate pump (handy for basements), a large tank, auto-defrost, quiet operation, or a durable casing for dusty garages. Also consider warranty, filter access and ease of cleaning - important if the unit will run for long periods in an outbuilding.
