Decide between short-throw and ultra-short-throw (UST) models: short-throw needs a little more distance, while UST sits almost level with the screen or wall. Consider where you can place the unit - on a shelf, in a TV cabinet or mounted - and check the throw ratio and recommended distance for your desired screen size.
Match the projector's brightness to the typical light conditions in the room; UST projectors with laser engines tend to perform better in brighter living rooms than older lamp models. If you want a bright daytime image without a dedicated screen or blackout blinds, look for higher-brightness, laser-based short-throw models.
Choose resolution according to how you’ll use the projector - 4K (or pixel-enhanced 4K) for movie nights and gaming gives sharper detail, while 1080p can be fine for smaller rooms or tighter budgets. Also check HDR support, colour handling and image processors, as these affect contrast, motion handling and overall picture quality.
Laser projectors have become the norm for short-throw units because they offer long life (often 20,000+ hours), instant on/off and more consistent colour than traditional lamps. Bear in mind laser models cost more up-front but usually need less maintenance and no lamp replacements, which can make them cheaper over several years.
Look for the ports and smart-platform support you need - HDMI (ideally eARC for soundbars), USB, optical audio, Bluetooth and built-in streaming (Android TV, Google TV, webOS, etc.). Consider built-in speaker quality if you’re not adding a sound system, and check warranty terms and UK after-sales support from retailers such as Currys, John Lewis or Richer Sounds.
